DETAIL SCREENSHOTS Pt.1
The map is printed into a textile, not paper! you can see the weave in the close-up shot, it’s almost a similar texture as the wrap around the charcoal pencil. the print also has a slight chromatic aberration to it, so the gray coloring isn’t plain black ink (the K in CMYK), but colored ink at equal quantities to create black.
you can further see the chromatic aberration here. there are the cleaar squares points of interest, but also height mapping (dashed lines) and smaller dots that could be, a number of things.

guess they ran out of duct tape and are resorting to bandages for quick fixes. that or Jack couldn’t be bothered for a weld?
i’m still deeply puzzled by this One Page. this is not a photo, this is a drawing, but i’m not sure if it’s a traditional or digital drawing. both have some really complex implications!
- if traditional: this was either traced from a manual or blueprint, maybe even the original ones. the outline is faint and there’s the weird smudge on the top left corner of the drawing, which could be an ink smudge, or a xerox artefact. something about the concept of a xerox printer in space tickles me a lot. but if it’s done BY HAND, then someone spent a lot of time on this! and that arrow and calligraphy is so neatly done, it must have been by someone with technical drawing expertise, like an architect or industrial artist.
- if digital: why is the lining so faint in comparison to the other pages? it’s not the kind of faintness you find in a printer running out of ink. it was not printed by the same people who printed the manuals. also the page itself is in fairly good condition if you compare it to the manual. so it’s a newer thing so why is the outline so faint? very puzzling. also do they have like, scifi AutoCAD for this kind of stuff?
weird ass tubes
i love this scene, framing the pictures he’s taken in the unlit O2 marker. i’ve got all the image sequences over here!
we can see the condensation drops are clear so far, so Ava wasn’t lying about that.
rocks… with tubes?? also you can see how careful Simon was with his first navigation attempts. short controlled movements, carefully tracked on the map. then after his first O2 marker goes down (the first POI in the map is the weird asstubes), he picks up some speed

DETAIL SCREENSHOTS Pt.2
we had seen the condensation evaporate once touching metal before, but it’s only when Simon complains that “it’s too fucking hot in here” that the condensation has begun to turn red.
we also see that the roof texture is beginning to shift. there were discolorations and stains before, but the roof has begun to turn rough and uneven. it’s incredibly subtle and easy to miss!

im gonna need to do a masterpost of extreme close-ups on Simon’s eye when it’s reflecting what he’s looking at cus that shit is peak photography
we don’t see enough of his chunky boots. i love his chunky boots.
Simon wears The Harness™ over his clothes at first! whether that’s a win or a loss, depends on your perspective. Also on the ascend of the 13, Simon notably takes a good few deep (shaky) breaths, visibly trying to calm down.

Ava’s COI badge, but next to her shoulderbag strap is another badge that i can’t make out what it is. it’s clearer in the BTS shots but not by much. a medal maybe? not to be confused with the button on her coat.
also Ava I need you to explain to me how the huge spike in front of the grabber is supposed to help grasp a sample?? it’s just going to punch a hole, maybe crack the bone of the skeleton, but then what??
hiya Jack, also RIP. some shots from his welder goggles, and he has a COI badge on his shoulder too. last pic is probably the energy connector for the grabber, he connects it before he starts the weld
side of the radio speaker has some actually legible stuff!! “LOCAL MICROPHONE” and there’s a switch in the back that i can’t make out the words besides “test” on the down and “fo(??) to (??)” on the top. fuse to smth??

could never figure out the framing for this one. is it one of the circular gauges from the camera panel, or the gauge from the fire extinguisher? some loose curve of wire? i rly can’t tell. it KIIIINDA looks like it’s the pin and hinge of the fire extinguisher but i need some second opinion on it
every shot from inside the radio speaker is delicious
first view of the computer console, and FINALLY i can see the bits and dials on the bottom part of the camera control panel. first seen in the One Page.
X marks the spot <3 also fun fact, the wires have different textures! most are plastic wrapped, but some of them look like weave wrapped. pretty sure the white one is just a regular rope with frayed ends lol

kinda love that Simon puts the tape over the chair hinge instead of literally doing anything else with it. and then when he jerks the chair back in place, he gives it a little pat like a good doggo.
i just realized, this shot is from INSIDE the console screen! you can see the wiring from the sides!
BOOTS YIPEE!!! at first i thought they were some complicated looking hiking boots, but i think they are regular boots, with assorted straps around them, holding them together probably? also not sure if the plastic canvas looking portion is part of the strap situation, an extra layer going over both the pants and top of boot, or an addition to the pants. i do know they are assymetrical though.

i imagine they’ve run into the issue of the camera not being turned off, so they adjusted it to go off once every button press instead.

a few more shots of the knife holster. on the first one you can see there are faint brownish discolorations on it! it’s not just a play of the light, the black dye of the leather has faded a bit from time and wear!
i also spotted a metal eyelet on the cowl, could be from a piece of sleeve or jacket.
also this scene sort of establishes that the sub needs to be out of the red on the depth meter to receive proper radio signal.
considering that radio is an electromagnetic wave (a type of radiation), than that could be a hint of how much radiation absorption the blood ocean is capable of. or that their radio equipment is shitty. maybe both!
just a nice view of the pendant here! also i think it’s meaningful that we get this close-up of the seed just before Simon apologizes again for the xray incident.
i do love the framing on this scene. the radio often is shown from above because that’s how it’s placed, but the way they also frame Simon here really accentuates it. Simon is realizing his time in the sub might be done, but also that he fucked up real bad and they might just kill him the moment they open up the sub again. the way he talks and emotes makes him look like a kid gauging just how bad of a time he’s gonna have once his parents are home or smth. he’s literally two apples tall here.
love the little halo of items Simon’s got going around the control console by this point. not messy, just lived in <3
oh, our little merry band of brothers. the raw screenshot and an edited version where i brightened and adjusted the colors a bit so we can see them better.
even early in the post-Rapture, we’re all rocking the Matrix Zion collection. also you can see Simon already has the knife holster on him.

i don’t care what you say, that’s AT LEAST a few bruised ribs, but probably they are actually cracked. he fell a couple meters and landed straight on that wall edge like holy shit?? and of course the concussion, can’t forget the concussion. massive back bruises for proof, not that we needed any more.

that COI badge on the lifesaver is actually hilarious, and the cursive 2 on the canister is cute. cursive lives in scifi dystopia world!!
that black line along the inseam tells me they had to take out the pants to fit Simon. probably a refitting to keep using the item, or he grew past them and needed the adjustment. fitting! also random bit of string on this right leg, not sure why.

the frames from the post-shadowman spark btw. it actually shows the engine restart for a single frame, nice and clear! voltage irregularities save the day??
for those who don’t know, that’s subsistence calories. people need somewhere between 1,800-3,000 a day (depending on multiple factors) so even eating this whole thing, he would still be hungry for most of the movie runtime.
self-correction: i thought they had xeroxed the page with the missing piece to cover their ass, but nope, the paper was just torn after all. my baaad!
that’s some really clean lines, both on the actual lines and on the paper trimming. wonder if he used the edges of the folios instead of a ruler?
Xs, xs, x marks the spot. how often will they haunt us….
so here’s the thing about tape. if whatever you’re trying to stick it to is too hot or wet or both, then it just won’t stick. and we know it’s hot inside the sub for many reasons, and some of the metal is steaming hot. it’s a simpler and lamer reason than “shadowman did it” but, Occam’s razor.
