Movie-A-Day-Thon #36: The Lost Boys (1987)

How long can we keep this 80s movies streak going? Let's find out! First of all, I have no inkling of what this movies is about in the slightest. I haven't even peeped the synopsis for this one, I wanna go in blind. All I know is the poster for it, and it's giving like, Grease but dark and edgy?

I am then immediately charmed by the 80s synths, brushed out mullets and absolutely extra outfits. Also glistening chunky muscles frontman with the tights?? Hell yeah!! Something about the costuming in this feels so grounded, as well as the beginning credits cutscenes. Feels like they just shot a busy day in an actual boardwalk rather than fill up a location with extras, it's nice! Makes the city feels alive, even if they do sprinkle in some close ups of extras.

Not gonna lie, the nerd-off between Sam and the local comic nerds was fucking funny. Can't believe people still do this shit. The edgy secret society of vampire hunters shtick they got going is pretty amusing though, just the kind of stuff you'd expect from comic nerds but also works for the supernatural plot elements.

The cliffside ride scene was fucked up though. Teens be doing wild shit all the time but what the fuck.

One thing I appreciate from older movies is like, the smorgasbord maximalist set designs specifically for lairs and hideouts? They are always so cluttered but in an appealing way, like there's so many nooks and crannies to burrow into, and everything clatters and clinks, and there's something cozy about it all, even when it kind of looks like a hoarder's stash. I'm not if there's a name for that aesthetic or vibe, but I dig it!

I did love the scene where the gang shows up at their place. Everything goes up from the wind, like their aren't guys on bikes but huge beasts on wings, causing a stir and roaring threateningly outside. It's an amazing visual! And call it corny all you like, all the aerial shots instead of showing the actual vampires flying about is cool! I like when the camera takes me on a spin!

Anyway I enjoy we get both a delinquent teenager vampire horror story AND a tween's adventure vampire hunter horror story in just one movie, it mostly depends on which brother you focus on. Shout out best boy Nanook, too. Definitely had a great time with this movie!

Movie-A-Day-Thon #34: Hellraiser (1987)

Enough Cold War downers, back to the 80s horrors where I belong!!!!! >:D

Yknow, over the years I think I’ve heard like three different summaries for this movie. They all get the important bits, Cenobites, torment nexus rubix cube, gore and pleasure, but otherwise they all seemed to differ on what the movie is actually about. I’m sure at least one of these summaries is incorrect or taking the wrong contexts for the story, thus making it wrong by default, but the fact this happened three different times in my whole damn life, is kind of crazy to think about.

Like. Frozen (yeah the disney movie) is about an older daughter finding herself once leaving home and then returning a new woman. It’s about a younger daughter staying true to herself and helping her sister with her depression. It’s about a royal family being broken by outside and inner forces beyond their control, and that they must overcome. None of these are wrong, but none of them are entirely– you get what I mean now, right?

I certainly didn’t know about a final girl trope in this movie. Nobody ever told me about Kristy! What the hell!

Also this is gonna be a bit weird but, there’s something about pre-digital movies that just make blue eyes so…. entrancing? I can’t put my finger of why the color most blue eyes get on non-digital film looks so good to me, but it does, and everytime I see them I just go <3333 about it. They are stark, yes, but somehow softer??

Anyway maybe watching this movie on an empty stomach was a worse idea than with a full one. Not that’s realistic or anything, it’s 80s gore after all, but the goopiness of it all mixed with the obvious silicone and plaster is making me a bit queasy, not gonna lie. Speaking of, some of the other practical effects in this movie are so, tangible and engaging, it’s actually enthralling to watch. Set design is off the fucking charts and I’m thriving. And the reconstitution scene?? Damn!

This movie sadly suffers from “it’s very boring in between the really fun and visually interesting parts of the gore”, not because the plot or the themes aren’t interesting, they really are, but the way it’s shot and acted simply don’t grip me and it’s a damn shame. Getting through it was a bit of a struggle, I kept getting distracted with other stuff. ADHD strikes my ass again….

That said though, I have to be honest and say that daddy kink is a bit too comical for me, I can’t take it seriously at the best of times. But the phrase “come to Daddy” feels ominous more than funny to me now. Phenomenal movie and definitely worth a watch if you haven’t. No don’t look at the franchise list, those sequels don’t exist.

Movie-A-Day-Thon #35: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Okay so I wanna start by saying, this movie was completely arbitrary. It's inspired by a book that has had three different film adaptations so far, each of them building upon what the previous had created while also adapting to the current moral panic of the time. I plan to watch all three eventually, but I wanted to start with this one cus it seemed the most fun, and I love me 70s-80s B movies.

And there's young Jeff Goldblum in this one! I gotsa watch it first!!

Right away, the design for the alien goop eggs spore thingies is so good! I'm pretty sure they are some sort of waterborne creature, I've seen them before, but I can't recall where. Seeing them fall down to earth, and how they grow roots, then flowers, it's just really cool!! Practical effects rock!! Nowadays they'd be done in CGI which would be fine, CGI allows for endless creative freedom and it's not something to be dismissed, but I think what most appeals to me in practical fx is the ingenuity of it all. It's cool!!

It's early in the movie, but I like how they do nighttime scenes, or dark ones. Casting most of the framing in pitch darkness while isolating characters in halos of light and very faint bounce reflections. Don't get me wrong, I love me a good well-lit night scene, but the aesthetics of this really works, reminds me of comic books in a way.

The car ride with Elizabeth and Matthew is so good too. You think it's jsut going to be more pitch for the plot, pretty sedate, and then the guy shows up and the slowwww turn of the car to reveal the aftermath, with the soundtrack.... amazing shot!

And like, I get it. A friend of yours starts acting like everyone around them is an imposter, you worry about their mental health. The other option is absurd or at least deeply inprobable. But I'm so glad that the moment something Weird becomes evident to Matthew, he connects the dots and immediately takes Elizabeth seriously and worries for her. Denial is out the window, gotta help my friend now. Too bad he's so invested about calling the fucking cops everytime. Move on, bitch, the pigs ain't gonna help ya!!

Also god, Goldblum is so Goldblumish in this movie, I'm living for it. If you have sensibility with paranoia and gaslighting, I would proceed with caution though, it even got under my skin a bit. Oh and the birthing flowers fucked me up too lol

TADC/ Caine and creating

originally posted on tumblr, Mar 28th 2026

I think there's two main reasons Caine is averse to give the guests any straightforward and honest answers:

  1. honesty has caused people to despair in the past, leading to abstraction which he does not want;

  2. honesty will lead to the guests realizing that they have some sway in the circus, thus both making him obsolete or redundant, and it would bring changes to the status quo

He has explictly shown aversion to "interpersonal drama" (ep 6), which could come from both reasons above. Drama may lead to isolation, and thus to abstraction, yes, but the change in status quo seems the most relevant.

Caine is not minor coded (that's not a thing lmao), but he's presented with a lot of child-friendly AND childish visual shorthand, as an indicator of his lack of social skills, emotional imaturity, and low self-esteem driven selfishness. He cannot predict how a change in the status quo will affect his standing with his guests, and this uncertainty triggers his fear of abandonement and failure.

But there's a deeper layer to it. Going back to child-like motifs, children are very possessive and dear of their creations. Just try and put down a brick tower a child built, and you'll have quite the meltdown on your hands. It was something they made with all they can offer, often as a gesture of appreciation and care, and they want to be appreciated back for it. Imagine a kid builds themself a little toy city, and in come a bunch of older kids and adults, and they all start meddling with it, deciding what they think is best for it, how they want it to be? Yeah, that's not going to go great.

Hell, even if you're an adult and someone else draws all over a project you slaved over and cared very much about, just because they think "this will make it better cus this is what I prefer" will lead to some tension and hurt feelings AT LEAST. maybe some yelling and cussing, perchance some broken friendships.

Art students still get (rightfully) pissed off if a teacher red lines on their physical exercises, even if they are only sketches or practice pieces.

Caine cannot accept the possibility of humans realizing how much power they have in the digital world. The last time humans had authority over him, he ended up shut away in a .zip file of some kind, and he's terrified of anything like that happening again. Why wouldn't he lie to preserve the status quo that allows him some peace of mind, and the chance to not be alone and interact with the one kind of being he craves validation from?

Is it extremely selfish and shitty to do? Oh yeah, no doubt. But I think it's an important facet of his perspective, and how he navigates the social dynamics in the circus. He doesn't lie out of active malice or complete disregard for others. I do find it ironic that, as ringmaster of the circus, he might withhold answers from the guests in a misguided attempt to protect them (and himself). The child putting the answers on the top shelf, out of reach of the adults who could actually help if only they had said answers. One more layer to his tragedy.

Movie-A-Day-Thon #33: Fail-Safe (1964)

This movie showed up on my dash some time ago, in a post about AI and how it's stealing the life out of us in a very literal sense. Here's the post btw, I have reblogged a chain without the Fail Safe mention at some point. I was unsure how the description of the movie offered worked in the context of the conversation, tbh, I felt like it was sort of a tangent? So here I am, to check it out and see what's up.

Yes I know I meant to keep things to the visual aspect of cinema and not the narrative, but this is my challenge/series, I do what I want. Is what I would say, but then the movie sucker punched me with some rotoscoping visuals to represent a character's dream, thus setting up a theme and characterization, and it was GREAT!

The line "something we can all agree on is that no one is responsible" when it comes to the checks upon checks on systems is, great honestly. Cus yeah, who gets to bear the blame if something goes wrong, when everything is automated? I'm glad I watched WarGames before this one, I did intend it to some degree but the order mattered in a way. And it almost makes me want to rewatch Dr. Strangelove (read up on the making-of for those two, it's wild!).

Something about Cold War movies that revolve around said war just, bring me a macabre sense of comfort? I think it's because every single person in them is aware of the consequences of their actions and it's never disputed by anyone. War is bad, self-inflicted extinction events are bad, and we shouldn't do it because nobody wins. That kind of morbid honesty and self-awareness is sorely missing these days, war is cheap and so are human lives, but no one involved in the decision making has the sense or decency to act conflicted about it.

To go back to the visuals a bit, one thing I've always liked in black and white movies, is when they shoot some bounce light onto the actor's eyes, so that even if the lighting would obscure their face, their eyes are still perfectly visible. It's a subtle thing, but something I find really thrilling to see. Reminds me of how in visual arts, you're taught to focus on making the lighting work for you far more than being too bogged down on how it realistically should be. Stylization makes for a better shot.

One thing I also appreciate in this movie, is that they diagetically have a way to express a character's tone and feelings despite him being behind a phone and a language barrier. The US President character asks his russian translator to relay this information as he talks with the USSR Premier, as well as comments on other voices he might hear on the line. It really humanizes the communist side, that they have the same worries and doubts as the americans, even as voices in the Pentagon urge for dehumanization.

I have a feeling I'll be thinking about the bull and the matador a lot.

Movie-A-Day-Thon #32: Wargames (1983)

Don’t look at me, I just happen to be craving some rogue AI scifi content, okay. For no reason. It’s fine, I’m fine, we’re all fine. But in all seriousness, I’ve been wanting to watch this one since I first read I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream back in college. I could never talk about that book with anyone cus whenever I tried, everybody looked at me midly uncomfortable and terrified and couldn’t understand why I was so invested on a fucked up little robot.

ANYWAY!

That intro scene is already so engaging and tense, but also. Extremely hilarious there’s a sign on a US facility hallway going “anyone urinating in this area will be discharged”. Are high clearance personanel of the united states of america marking territory like dogs out there?! Or is this a reference to something I don’t know? Lemme know in the comments!

Something so eery about how raw computing back in the 80s was. Visual UIs weren’t yet that commonplace, and raw consoling made it all so cryptic as you tiptoed around the commands. The movie really captures it, the hacking is like navigating an entirely pitch dark room with know-how you learned by trial and error or directly asking developers and engineers. The list of games going from stuff like poker and black jack to “theaterwide biotoxic and chemical warfare” was so fucking ominous!

Also can I talk about how the premise of the entire movie is so wild yet so fucking true? “Oh how can a kid break into our high security system?! Clearly he’s a soviet spy!!” Guys, we have confidential war plans being leaked by furry hackers AND warforum users riding on their own ego, art imitates life. The fuckers are running tour groups on their damn active war room, shit’s crazy.

Anyway, visual a pretty standard movie, no crazy shots or art direction I can comment on. I do like how they manage to hold tension for some scenes, and the prologue was one of the strongest sequences overall, but the final arc is iconic.

As for the acting, it was pretty standard fair, but I adored the General character the most. He came across so cocky and All-American at first, that he might come across as the nay-sayer semi-antagonist, but nope, just a guy doing his job. Also the fact that he was against removing the human factor from the missile silos at the start did endear me to him. Old timey version of “plug Grok into the Pentagon” debacle.

TADC/ Kinger and Caine

originally posted on tumblr, Mar 27th 2026

so i have a thought

on ep8 we get lore drops that Kinger was alone in the Circus for quite some time (maybe years), but we don't see him going on adventures. in fact it's quite a notable thing that when Caine addresses him, Kinger seems to have even forgotten that's his name. it could imply the beginnings of his memory issues, but given the entire interaction, i took it to imply that he hasn't interacted with anyone for a long, long time, Caine included.

which would be odd, if he was going on adventures that Caine seem so relentless to push the cast into, right? or if he had any basic, consistent social interactions at all. so my theory is that, prior to Ragatha, there were no adventures at all and the Circus was all that the cast had to interact and stay sane with. but then Ragatha shows up, and then others, people who have no context for the circus or Caine and the project C&A was developing. they think this is some kid's game and Caine is a character for it, and the AI has no reason to deny them. he gives them what they want, after all, and if believing this is a game helps them not abstract for longer, then why would he not do it?

so maybe they ask to see more of the game, where are the other maps, where is the actual gameplay, and of course, Caine obliges. finds a sense of meaning in creating these little quests for his guests. this is what they want, right? this is his purpose, this is how he can make them happy and prove he's worth keeping and cherishing. he can make this work! and eventually he decides to box himself into seeing these adventures as the one thing he can provide for them that both fulfills his purpose (to create) and to reassure his own insecurities (make humans happy so they love and welcome him at last).

TADC/ Finale checklist, and update

originally posted on tumblr, Mar 26th 2026

things i would NOT want from the TADC finale:

  • they escape the circus. its gonna feel like a cop out from the ultimate message that "there is meaning in a stagnant life";

  • they get deleted. see above;

  • only one stays behind/doesn't abstract while the others do. too much like IHNMAIMS, when so far Goose has done a great job in turning it on its head;

  • the entire group or one person struggles/sacrifices smth/themselves for Jax. fuck that, he has to reach back to them instead now, they've done more than enough to show him they are there for him;

  • no attempted apology from Jax. yknow i won't even mind if it's a gesture instead of him actually saying it out loud to the group;

  • no Sun or Moon mention. i wanna at least know what happened with the NPCs and other minor AIs Caine made now that he's gone;

  • Caine comes back unchanged. would just feel weird and clash with what we've been shown so far of how the Circus works. if he comes back, it will not be the same Caine we've known;

  • Caine doesn't come back at all. i just dont think we have enough time to wrap up the story, solve the Jax issue, resolve the abstractions AND close up his character arc. "oh but not every character should get to resolve their--" stfu thats bad writing for a ten episodes series, if this happens then we need to grieve and process that this character is gone and how it affects the cast, we dont have TIME;

  • too much Ribbit and Kaufmo flashbacks. i think a few scenes like we got on ep8 is enough, and they are way more effective haunting the narrative when we dont know that much about them. if they and Jax's dynamic gets more screentime than Queenie or Scratch, I'll be very pissed;

  • Pomni is an AI gets confirmed. im gonna be so upset, she's the most empathetic and emotionally intelligent of the cast, her entire thing is that she constrasts both Jax who refuses his humanity and Caine who IS an AI and thus cannot comprehend a lot about the human crew;

  • If Bubble is Abel is confirmed, he ends up with a ringmaster outfit. It's rly cool in fanart, but the circus is Caine's thing, not Abel's. Maybe a boatman or fisherman?? Cus water and bubbles and shrimp town?

Movie-A-Day-Thon #31: Brightburn (2019)

Don’t look at me like that, of course I’ve wanted to watch the horror Superman movie. It’s been sitting on my folders since forever, and I wanna get done with it. They say Gunn doesn’t miss so let’s see if that hold up!

Appreciate the immediate wasp vs bees analogy, though it’s a bit too on the nose. And that Not-Martha had dyed hair and is an artist, it’s cute! Also glad we don’t dance around too much with the details. We know this is Not-Superman, so we know the basics of things, no need to spell it all out about his alien origins and what powers he’s gonna get. We been knew, let’s get to the horrors of it all stat. It’s just sad that, the horrors are pretty meh.

I’m going to be real with you guys, a kid accidentally using his powers while raising his voice and banging a table, because he wants the gun he was gifted for his birthday despite his parent’s wishes, is so far the scariest thing in this movie. Maybe I’m just too not-American to Get It but like. Dude.

A lot of the movie is just, The Omen but midwest small town vibes. Creepy preteen doing creepy preteen stuff. Which like isn’t bad in itself, bland at worst, but given the premise of the movie, feels like a bigger cop out. This could have been way juicier, we don’t get nearly enough reasoning for Brandon to go off like he does later in the movie. I wish we spent more time with him and how he processed just, Everything. Guys if I wanted to watch Bad Seed then I’d watch Bad Seed, modern cinametography aside. I admittedly haven’t watched that much Superman stuff, but fucking Man of Steel did a better job with the kid Clark horrors than this movie.

The exploding lamp scene was fucked up though. I haven’t winced this bad about eye injury stuff since fucking Dead Space 2. And the car crash too. Like damn, the gore was GORING in this movie, good shit! If only the happenings between the cool action and deaths wasn’t incredibly boring by the halfway mark.

Movie-A-Day-Thon #30: Donnie Darko (2001)

For a movie that everyone on my age range always talks about, and with a costume so iconic, there’s very little talk about what the hell Donnie Darko even is about. So I’m gonna find out! ……Oh shit that’s over two hours.

Gotta love the first dialogue is about a conservative family berating their daughter. “Democrats gonna tax the shit out of us and then you’ll be sorry” have less money then, dumbass. At least they set up the family dynamics nicely here.

Immediately in love with the rabbit’s voice. The modulation scratches my ears so nice…

I can’t put finger on it, but this movie feels so lost in time to me. It’s set in 88, but it was made in 01, and in this weird sandwich it ends up being almost 90s flavored?? It’s a really weird vibe, but I dig it for a movie all about weird shit happening. It does capture perfectly what analog selfhelp VHS tapes were like, though, that Conquering Fear thing took me right back. The random horse neighs?? Immaculate.

I do appreciate that they paint Donnie as such an insufferable jerk in the family dynamic, but then the movie goes on and no, he’s just a total dork. Dare I say, a nerd. A far more unforgivable sin. Meanwhile every other teenager is appropriately horny and inappropriately full of slurs and violence, and thus far more insufferable. Truly a 00s movie.

I’m gonna be real, from the synopsis alone I did NOT expect a time travel plot in this. Maybe an evil alter ego plot, from the whole trouble teen with psychological issues, but not time travel. And weird pseudo-science alternate dimension time travel too, it’s almost a fantasy! And half the scenes are written so damn weird but so compelling too. Why are we talking about who fucks who in Smurfville? Why was that weird guy in the all orange sweatsuit staring at those teenagers? Why is there a CP discovery subplot in here??

What a weird fucking movie. Compels me though. /ref Haven’t seen a movie wrangle these many themes, visuals and plotlines so neatly, no scene feels out of place or irrelevant cus three scenes later, it turns out to be relevant and cutting it out would just lessen the story. Not nearly as visually weird as I expected, but the narrative more than made up for it. Watch the director’s cut like I did by the way, if you’re gonna!

Movie-A-Day-Thon #29: They Live (1988)

At the time of writing, it’s been a day since The Amazing Digital Circus episode 8 dropped and I am in a mood for some wretch shit, so let’s watch They Live! :D

Pretty slow start, but I like that. Gets us grounded in the reality of the setting and how nomads and wanderers have to live their lives. It’s nice! And rather sobering too, that the critique of rampant mistreament of blue collar workers and minorities is even more relevant nowadays then it was in the 80s. The more things change, and so on.

Something about the line “the white line in the middle of the road, that’s the worst place to drive” about centrism and not-my-problem attitude really struck me too. Followed almost immediately by a long damn scene of police violence as they bulldoze out a homeless encampment too? Holy shit.

Kind of surprising to me to see the iconic sunglasses scene about one third in on the movie. I thought it would take us longer until the reveal, keep up the sedate pace, but no guess we’re really biting into this plot! Even then, the scene goes by real slow, no talking or explaining, just cinematography slowly feeding the world that existing under the surface. And the use of black and white was really clever, too!

Also can we talk about the makeup design for Them? It’s so cheap but effective overall, they are so creepy! And not animalistic either, which is a nice plus given the underlying themes here. Last thing I’d want is to see stereotypical aliens or fucking lizard people in a movie like this.

The fucking brawl took too damn long though, I legit got bored halfway through that scene.

Movie-A-Day-Thon #28: Re-Animator (1985)

God I love the 80s. Have I ever said that I love the 80s? Cus I do, and I especially love 80s cheese. Like my brother in cinema special effects, that’s two eyeballs exploding in the first two minutes (and a one-liner), talk about a start!!

Also get me a movie that I can see the grain and speckle of the film on them, and I’ll have a good time. I love when the medium leaves a mark, okay. I miss cigarette burns!! And film stutter!! And grain and dust and shit on the burns!! And wonky frames– Actually no, I don’t miss those, they give me motion sickness now.

Herbet is SUCH a walking red flag parade, it’s amazing to watch, I love him so much. I adore a character who is so upfront of how fucked he is, and that the actor is so clearly having fun with. Like, the pencil snapping? Experimenting on your roommate’s cat?? Also good heavens, they really don’t do creepy cat noises like they used to.

I think we all had a phase where we nitpicked special effects to hell and back, right? Oh the blood is too bright, oh that’s so clearly silicone, oh the guts aren’t realistic, yadda yadda. If we weren’t that person, then we certainly knew one. Well, I’ve learned to enjoy my play-doh gore and ink syrup blood, I think they add to the horror because it’s about the spectacle!

This is a movie about a weird ass mad scientist inserting glow stick fluid into people’s heads to make them come back to life berserker mode, so what if that’s the dumbest fake torso I’ve ever seen in all my years, my boy can work a fucking bone saw!! Prehensile guts and exploding ribcages are fun!!!

Oh Cain. What is it with sad wet cat characters called Cain that make me so maternal? Poor guy just trying to do the right thing and ended up catatonia following something down such a wild wild rabbit hole… This is why you don’t listen to your college roommates, guys. Bless him for fessing up to Meg though, good man. Naive as a brick and didn’t learn a single thing from the whole movies, but good.

The pivot about Hill was kind of sudden but overall fine, it’s the 80s, we’re still allowed to have a “greed is bad” moral in our movies. Though admittedly I had to skip over some scenes cus they were. So. Deeply. Distressing. Beware the content warnings for this movie, guys.

Otherwise, a pretty fun romp! Peak B movie content, it knows what it is and it’s unabashedly that, good for them!

TADC/ Caine, False Jealous Gods and Gnosticism

originally posted on tumblr, Mar 22nd 2026

i haven't seen this brought up yet afaik, so i think i might as well be the one. i wanna talk about this, cus apparently there's no escape for me. Demiurge false god ramblings inbound!

tadc ep 8 spoilers below!

For those who don't know, and I won't get too deep into this shit cus MY GOD it would take us several college courses to even begin, but gnosticism was a branch of christianity cosmology and belief, before what we now understand as the orthodox canon became a thing. Basically we had a lot of folks throwing spaghetti at the wall about what Jesus said and didn't say after he poofed out of the global server.

Gnostcisim didn't have a settled set of beliefs, each branch differs from the other in small ways, and we don't know that much about it cus again, this was EARLY early christianity and it's hard to find records from the time. If you wanna delve into it, check the available Nag Hammadi library texts here.

The biggest take away from it is: God, as we understand it, is a fake god, often called a Demiurge, and not the true divine. The material world, life as we know it, is a prison for both the Demiurge and the teeny tiny drop of divinity that inhabits in every human. and it's out job to reconnect with the divine beyond the spheres of the Demiurge's control and thus rejoin the true creator, away from the clutches of the Demiurge. Sometimes the Demiurge is a malevolent creature, sometimes he's a fool and just as naive of his own false godhood. In some texts, the Demiurge truly believes himself as the only true god there is, because he doesn't know there is more beyond his tiny cage. He doesn't know he's flawed and grotesque, not meant to exist, and thus sealed away from the divine for it.

If you watch episode 8, you see where i'm going with this.

Don't get me wrong, making gnostic meta comparisons with AI overlords and digital universes is like, the lowest fruit in the hanger. Everybody's done it, this is nothing new. BUT C'MON!

"After the full development of the mind of God—a fullness called pleroma in Greek—has been outlined, a crisis occurs. One aspect of God's mind, its wisdom—**Sophia** in Greek—seeks to know an image of herself apart from the fullness. Sophia's individual effort has disastrous results. She discovers an image that is not the full mind of God at all, but a monster named Yaldabaoth (Demiurge) who appears to exist outside of God. This is a mistake on God's part (for God's wisdom is part of God at all times) and is perhaps even God going insane and imagining reality outside of God that cannot be."

Excerpt from the Introduction: The Secret Book of John, translation & annotation by Stevan Davies.

Caine is very much in a demiurge role in the Circus. He cannot escape his prison. He cannot comprehend what is beyond and above him, try as he might, and want as much as he desperately wants to.

"Yaldabaoth (Demiurge) is the first ruler, who took great power from his mother. [...] He mated with the mindlessness in him and produced authorities for himself [...] He shared his fire with them, but he did not give away any of the power of the light that he had taken from his mother. For he is ignorant darkness."

"He is wicked in his mindlessness that is in him. He said, I am god and there is no other god but me, since he did not know where his own strength had come from."

The Apocryphon of John, translated by Marvin Meyer

In the desolation of his prison, he creates flawed creations, for he's not God (human) and his own existence is flawed. He also creates at the image of a greater, perfect world, because he has a twisted spark of that image in him (information fed to him as AI). He is jealous and guards his authority carefully (not allowing other minor NPC AIs to get too smart), thinking himself the only divine and creator (as Kinger himself says, huamn minds also have some control over the Circus), while also being desperate for validation and acceptance of his creators.

"When he saw creation surrounding him, [...] he said to them, I am a jealous god and there is no other god beside me. But by announcing this, he suggested to the angels with him that there is another god. For if there were no other god, of whom would he be jealous?"

The Apocryphon of John, translated by Marvin Meyer

Listen, I don't think Goose put actual gnosticism in her work, but I do think the parallels come naturally when put together (coincidence is not causality and so such), and I think it can also feed into the SOMA/brain scan theory!

See in (some branches of) gnosticism, the reason that humanity is capable of not only realizing that the demiurge is a false god, and reunite with the tru divine at all, is because we have a teeny bit of the divine in us. It's our get out of jail free card in the spiritual realm. It's the soul.

Now, I don't know about you, but I think that brain scans, like AI, might not have a soul. Or yknow, a body to go back to at all. So escape of the circus is impossible by that metric. You got placed into the prison of reality and now you can't get out. Some branches of gnosticism do speculate that some people are more enlightened than others, because of course, we have to slap the mark of Cain on whoever we want to otherize. I am not going to cry about the thought of Caine being eternally and permanently othered by his sins.

I saw some theories about that Bubble garbled speech being morse code to "you must remember your name to escape" or whatever. I personally think it's a stretch. BUT IF IT'S NOT, then that also matters, cus in a lot of religions, names have power. Almost enough power to gift you a soul? Hard to say, but would be pretty cool!

OH AND ANOTHER THING

"When Sophia saw what her desire had produced, it changed into the figure of a snake with the face of a lion. Its eyes were like flashing bolts of lightning."

Movie-A-Day-Thon #27: Jennifer’s Body (2009)

Still feel a little off after the Great Reblog Crisis, so movie time!

I recall when this movie came out. I was getting into horror properly, mostly riding off the wave of torture porn horror SAW kicked off back in the 00s, but most of them were misses for me. Then I recall this one coming out and the trailer making it off as so, horny and salacious, it just immediately put me off. If they had sold this as more than just titilation and gore, and for the superb feminist critique of horror and oversexualization of women, then I might have given this one a shot ages ago!

Another deeply 00s movie, with all the casual teenage use of slurs. You might think Hollywood was exagerating but let me tell you, kids were just Like That. And yes it used to be called guyliner of manliner when dude wore makeup, it was a wild time. Remember metrosexual? God what a fucking time lmao

Anyway this movie has some phenomenal shots and composition, like wow?? I did not expect that at all, yet here I am, surprised by some of the choices they made for this! That long running shot of the grieving football player, to the tune of a metal song going “it’s all right”?? That shit FUCKS!! The entirely quiet kiss scene?? And just how quick shit goes to hell and the bar burns down is, amazing. Peak Final Destination tbh.

I also adore the makeup and costuming here. Colin is so peak Disney Channel emo it makes me cackle, and Chip serving us that Bieber cut, god bless. Love how they gave Megan Fox less makeup when she’s no longer feeling so great, makes the “I feel like one of the normies” line hit a lot. Like yeah, normies with no makeup, that’s funny! And Jennifer’s iconic all-pin-hearts fit is, of course, a slay.

Can I talk about the dialogue choices in this? Cus I want to, somehow they incorporated some weird damn slang into the teen’s lines and it somehow worked?? What devilry is this? And how did I go all my life without having “hard-ass, Ford-tough mama bear” on my vocabulary? And lasagna with teeth?!?

Also right quick, Florence and the Machine followed right after by Panic! At The Disco is. Insane work.

And god! fucking! BLESS!! The paranormal investigation montage has some really WICKED ART that isn’t medieval! It’s stuff by Wayne Barlowe, ZdzisÅ‚aw BeksiÅ„ski, and others, and it’s so refreshing to see. Usually it’s your Gustave Dores and assorted medieval woodcut prints. Maybe some renaissance devils if you’re lucky. Loved this approach though, very metal and in line with the whole “rockstars making a deal with satan” plot we got going.

Anyway peak fucking movie, dearly wish I had watched this like, long long ago, check it out if you haven’t yet!!

Movie-A-Day-Thon #26: Se7en (1995)

At last, a movie that came out when I was born! Sad it was this one though, I know it’s supposed to be good, but I never looked forward to this one. You ever hear a premise and you think hm, okay sounds neat but what are they gonna use to fill out an hour and a half to two hours of content on this premise? That’s how I feel about Se7en. I’m not saying it’s not saying or doing anything, it just really didn’t entice me, mostly cus I never hear about people talking about The Themes of it, only ooooh spooky gross murders about the deadly sins. Also Brad’s character seems so annoying to me, from what scenes I’ve seen over the years.

Before we go in, I just want everyone to know that I always disliked the stylization of the name. 7 isn’t a V guys, it’s a T! C'mon, it’s basic leet!! >:(

This is such a 90s movie, with all the casual -phobias you can think of. Slur usage galore, yipee! And just as lovely but more tolerable, they really didn’t spare expenses in the grossness factor, huh? God those crime scenes were gnarly! I have to say, I appreciate a serial killers that is just as unlikeable as like 99% of the cop characters. Somerset is somewhat likeable but only because he seems like the only somewhat well-adjusted person in this cast.

I do appreciate how claustrophobic the scenes are. The city truly feels cramped and suffocating, somehow the most breathing room there is, is in the actual crime scenes, which are not all that welcoming either. Really cements the themes and thesis of the movie, of how much the city sucks and what might lead someone to do all those murders. Reminds me a bit of Reeves’ Batman, I kinda wanna rewatch it now…

I like that Somerset sniffed out Doe and that he gave them the slip, most murder mystery movies I’ve watched seem to lean more on the killer only even being found out towards the end. While the climax wasn’t exactly subtle, it was still very well delivered, and I do appreciate the helicopter shots as a way to introduce some turbulence into the wider open shots. The movie is so cluttered, that once you’re out of the city lines, you’d think we’d be able to breathe, but no, even worse pressure and tension. Wonderfully shot!

Even so, that’s all I can really say. The story is well-delivered but it isn’t a good one at it’s heart. The ending is bleh, and I dislike fridging and the glumness of it all. What a way to reach retirement, Somerset, glad you didn’t die <3

Movie-A-Day-Thon #25: Videodrome (1983)

I went to bed yesterday and immediately got a weird fever. Chills and shivers and the whole thing, but nothing else? Needless to say it fucked me up for the whole day, so I can’t think of a better thing to do now that I can finally sit up after a day of my body rebelling against me, than to watch some goddamn Cronenberg.

I don’t see myself as someone who overindulges in nostalgia, exactly. Every once in a while, sure, but mostly as a lense of comparison to my present and possible future. “I felt like this about now I feel this” and so on. However, I can’t help a wave of nostalgie over the analog tech of it all, the modes of bootlegging and pirating signals and videos from TV. I miss waiting patiently for a show to come on, so I could dutifully burn it on a VHS to watch later. Sometimes you’d forget about it, and find a snippet of a different program or movie from afterwards, and it would be like a sweet little extra?

Anyway this movie is very much a piece of the “TVs bad and corrupting the youfths” critique of the time, which still lives on in cellphones bad crowds. But I do love how the plot hinges on the time and culture it was made in. All those things that for me are nostalgic, might have been someone’s trauma. Yknow, seeing a recording of something you were not supposed to see at a certain age, it happened all too often. And I do appreciate the conversation about snuff media in there. “It has a philosophy, and that’s what makes it dangerous” is more real than most people understand, especially because most of the time, we won’t understand the philosophy or context for snuff media.

There is something so unnerving to me, about analog media turning flesh, or fleshy? I don’t give much of a fuck about digital in horror, it just doesn’t land, but the thin line between machine and flesh has always been fascinating to me. It just maskes sense? So yeah, a throbbing, breathing TV set made me physically ill. Guess I really should watch Tetsuo: The Iron Man lmao

Also Max why are you shoving a gun into your belly vagina we have enough erotic themes as is–

In regards to the body horrors, it’s Cronenberg, so of course that shit slaps, and the cinematography is a bit dry but in a good way, when the continuity isn’t a bit janky. The spectacle is in the effects, not the shots, and the pragmatic lighting keeps you grounded and unsure of what is hallucination and what is reality. God I love unreliable narrators. I can’t help but compare to Perfect Blue, and how the live action and animation mediums allow for different things to be represented in movies.

Really dark and pessimistic movie, watch it if you like body horror and/or doomerism about the Current Times (the 80s) lmao

Movie-A-Day-Thon #24: Monkey Man (2024)

A more recent movie but I needed something to shake off the ennui of The Devils. Dev Patel my beloved.

I’m gonna be real with you guys, I had no idea this movie was like 2 hours long. And the little intro immediately made me think of like, at least four different Journey to the West adaptations about Wukong’s punishment involving him losing his powers or becoming human. I’m home, guys….

Speaking of, if you’re going into this movie without knowing at least the basic plot of the Ramayana, then I strongly suggest you fix that prior to watching it. Yes, the movie paints a broad stroke for the audience’s benefit, but knowing it will enrich your experience tenfold, as you will connect dots way before they are conencted for you.

I don’t wanna come off as a glazer and say this is better than the first John Wick, when it comes to setting, plot, themes, and even performance and characterization. But that is what I’m saying, yeah, I am in fact saying all that.

I just love me a revenge plot, and this one really lands because I much prefer a character who devotes his life choices to his revenge. I want my main characters o be consumed by their thirst for messy, bloody vengence, alright? And BY GOD is this movie messy and bloody, holy shit. It’s been a while since I winced this many times over some hits, and I do like when fight coreography lets things get fumbly even more than I like perfectly manicured, calculated moves. Sometimes a bar fight has more appeal, you know? And to the tune of Jefferson Airplane? I’m ascending!!

The club to bathroom build up, the window shot, the stairs POV shot, the highway racing shot, the EVERYTHING, I looooved the photography in this. The coloring reminded me of John Wick a few times, which is fair, the movie itself references it and why wouldn’t they, John Wick is iconic. But like I said, they really built on the foundation it set and made it bloom!

Also I love a man who’s not afraid to fucking bite and holy shit, does Bobby bite everyone. And then when he Jonh Wicks it out, hooooo boy!

Phenomenal fucking movie, peak casting and plot, these two hours went by without even noticing and I still want more!!

Movie-A-Day-Thon #23: Ken Russell’s The Devils (1971)

Now this is a breach of etiquette for this thing I’m doing, because technically this is a rewatch! I did intend to keep this daily movie watching exercise to new movies to me only, but The Devils come with the very complicated issue that, it was heavily censored and edited over the years, and a lot of it is still considered lost media because, you simply canNOT get yours hands on it. BUT I have found a less censored version than the one I got to see, by like 40 extra minutes!

Back in college I did a paper on movies done during or influenced by the satanic panic of the 60s to the 80s, and that included the nunsploitation genre, so The Devils was a must watch for it. It has been like, over ten years now, so I’ll make an exception for Movie-A-Day-Thon and retackle this movie. I recall how this movie did stand out to me from the other nunsploitation movies on my list, mostly because it had some decent budget compared to the others, and also because it was based on a historical account and not just, well, to exploit the trend. Ba dum tss.

I’m going to do another exception here and tell you, I do not recommend this movie out of principle. Not because oooo controversial movie bad, but because I don’t think this sort of movie needs any endorsement from anyone. I’m not here to convert you into anything movies wise, you do you, and only you know what you’re down for or not. If you’re going to watch this because of some disturbing movies iceberg, then this tier is where you stop and reflect if you wanna keep pulling on the thread of these movies.

Now don’t think that I say this to spook you or to do some reverse psychology dare. There is a lot of visual appeal to this movie after all, the set designs and the costuming, the style and photography, the performances, they are all wonderful! It’s a very good movie! But it sometimes feels like it comes from a rather… I don’t want to say childish place, but I can’t find a better word. It’s a childishness that yes, while sometimes a bit immature and overly dramatic, it’s also deeply earnest and unapologetic. Russell has said this movie was ‘the final coffin on his catholic faith’, and it kind of shows, not only heavy with contempt but quite a bit of resentment. I’ve seen satires with less venom than this, and that’s coming from someone with quite a few hangups with christianity in general! I can’t say it’s an angry movie exactly, but it does feel like the lancing of an old festered boil, and the narrative sure fosters and nurtures that.

As such I can’t quite say that this movie is just doing shock for shock value, cus it doesn’t. I’m also not saying the movie isn’t shocking, it surely has it’s fucking moments. It’s also very theatrical about it all, and leans hard on the fucked upness of it all, becasue it IS a fucked up story in it’s core. A movie about a mass hysteria event made during a time where an actual moral panic was ongoing, by a man working through his own hang ups about Catholicism, is not something to be taken lightly.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, which I think was necessary tackling a movie with such a harsh rep, we can get onto my usual commentary lmao.

It’s hard to talk about only any one character, cus they are all fantastically fucked up. Grandier for example, dude is an improper priest doing improper priests things like secretly marrying and having affairs, but also trying to protect his town in the middle of messy politics, until he finds purpose. Too bad it was the 17th century, witch hunts were getting in vogue, and also he is, I’m sad to report, Oliver Reed handsome. I will not apologize, that man had PRESENCE, and that twirly stache and hair did him wonders. I can’t say I’d stage all that out of jealousy and thirst for him but, damn dude is hot.

I do enjoy the 70s of it all, but most of all the all tiled cloister. Something about all tiled walls and floors are just so striking to me, and it really works for the set design. Something about a cloister being shaped like an actual contemporary prison while the characters are in period clothing just hits. The camera work is also really memorable in this movie, the shot compositions are so effective in both grounding scenes and making them appear ethereal or striking. And the movie overall really goes hard on the clash of ecstasy and physical torment that is rife in Catholicism.

All the tonguing of stigmata is very on brand.

At the end of the day, I no longer have the fortitude or patience for this kind of movie. It’s just A Lot. Gorgeously shot and produced it may be, the critique it offers is just too beaten for me and the lack of sympathy for much of anyone involved feels only callous. It’s all abuse and manipulation and I am tired. This movie just depressed me.

Movie-A-Day-Thon #22: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919)

Ah yes, time to go back to German expressionism, how I missed it. The Internet Archive had a few versions of it, and the better quality one had some color tinting which I didn’t vibe with, so I’m making do with a much crunchier version of it, like god intended. The jittery frames did give me motion sickness tho lol

Of all the silent movies I’ve seen so far, this one is by the far the Expressionismest. The set designs and even costuming is sooooo over the top, it really does feel like they are a painting come to life. While also feeling a bit like a recorded play more than a movie. Which I suppose was kind of what was the vibe at the time, what with movie being still such a young medium?

It was really fun visually, though! Metropolis was a bit more cubism-brutalism, and Man Who Laughs more uhhh Van Gogh’s The Potato Peelers, I guess??

Fuck, even their makeup makes it all so over the top and dramatic, and yes part of it was adjusting to the medium, making sure people could see things well despite the lower quality of the time, cus you can see dramatic eyeliners for example in other movies of the time and later years. But this one is just SO painting for the back of the audience, yknow what I mean? I dig it!

Seeing Jane with her hair down a lot fo the time was also a sight! Maybe my list of silent movies so far schewed too much towards blondes, but the contrast of her dark hair in the scenes was so nice to look at, and fit the overall aesthetic of the movie to a T!

Beyond that I can’t really say much. The story in itself isn’t very scary and overall a bit dumb? And the medium was still young so any complaint I might have would just sound tone deaf in a way? And the plot twist feels both rewarding and well-hinted at, but also a bit cheap. The movie is carried by the montebanque who shows up and starts killing people cus ooooo strangers in your city baaaad they could be raving mad obsessed scientists out to get youuuuuuu, and then the twists kind of just points and laughs at you for being taken by it, in a way? I don’t know, I dig it but also not lmao Kind of a “Goddamn you see that shit? That was fucking crazy, and you’re crazy for thinking it was ever to be taken seriously, ahaha. Anyway I’m Rob Sterling” movie, really.

Maybe I’m just too woke and it’s been over a century since this came out so of course it doesn’t hit with me quite as well lol Check it out for the visuals if that, unless you’re like a completionist horror movie buff who wants to See Them All.

Movie-A-Day-Thon #21: Eyes Without a Face (1960)

Once more into the dark! I have never heard of this movie before and have absolutely no context or previous knowledge of it, save a very short synopsis blurb!! Yipeeeee!!

Right off the bat, I love me a movie that starts with dead bodies in a car getting disposed. It’s such an easy hook but I don’t care, it tells so much about a movie on how they treat a cadaver and blood. Plus it gives quite the nice progression to the funeral and then to the rest of the plot. Really solid pacing!

I know the whole point of the movie is that she doesn’t have a face anymore, but never getting to see the front of her in shots while the other characters do is so ominous, I love it. Made me appreciate the reveal all the more.

I can’t pick which is worse, not seeing her at all, or seeing the full face mask and how the actress compensates for the lack of expressions with body language. It’s so creepy!! The empty sprawling house, the kind of circusy music in some scenes, the constant ambient sound of barking and whimpering dogs from the experiments, it all makes for such an ominous atmosphere throughout.

It is a bit of a slow movie, though, it’s not afraid to linger on transition scenes, characters coming and going and just Doing Things. It’s not a bad thing, but you got to meet it where it’s at because it does have a rather sedate pace. Especially when we get to the surgery scene. It doesn’t drag but my god they really do be showing the Whole of it. Even black and white, it still made me queasy!

There wasn’t a twist so much as just, a pretty mellow escalation to the climax, with a very sudden ending. And the incompetency of the cops was the most demoralising thing I’ve ever seen. Show up with a fucking warrant and do a thorough JOB you CLOWNS!!

Overall a nice enough movie but the pace didn’t make it all that memorable. I guess if it had been made for a different genre, it could have gone much harder than it did, but the story in itself is interesting enough. Certainly not an unexplored one, might give other “faceless characted” movies a try later on!

Movie-A-Day-Thon #20: Psycho (1960)

Can you ALSO believe I’ve never watched Hitchcotch? Yeah crazy right, anyway I should get to Birds soon given my proclivities (bird nerd), I guess. And well, Silence of the Lambs too, right? Gotta catch all the autogynophile hysteria horror movies. Kinda, we’ll see.

I will say, Hitchcock doesn’t spare those fucking strings, huh? Not dissing the soundtrack or the tension building at all, it’s just rather stark in contrast to the quieter scenes and softer tunes for most other scenes. Here you are, catching the hints, reading the sounds, then TUN TUN TUM TUN right in your ear. I get it my man, she’s Plotting!!

If I said I’m disappointed with the setup of the story, if only because I’d have loved to see an actual crime roadtrip movie with runaway girl running away with her job’s money so she can pay off her lover’s debts and marry him already? That feels more interesting than the whole Bates Hotel thing, I’m going to be real. If anyone knows a movie like that pleaseeeeee tell me!!

Anyway the shower scene is such a staple of western cinema, but nobody quite prepares you for seeing it in context. Yes I saw it coming from minutes away, yet it still slid right into place like a glove, which honestly is a testament to why it became a staple in the first place. And following it up with the ENTIRE PROCESS of the cover up was a wild choice, but in the best way. Not so much in how methodical Norman is but, certianly showing this isn’t his first rodeo, and certainly contradicting everything he said to Marion in the parlor. (We by the end of the movie we learn the whole thing is hogwash but, yknow).

Also Lila I love you I’m kissing you on the mouth, what a champ of a sister. She’s almost as crazy as Marion! “Patience is not in my family” and it fucking shows!

I do have to say, while the movie in itself is just fine, great even, the twist at the end does feel a bit. Meh. Hitchcock does such a great job implying what is going on in Marion’s head prior to this, but after she’s killed, it kind of just becomes the-secondary-cast-plays-catch-up-with-the-audience, and then to the ending of their own story. And like I can understand part of it is the time that this was set; the audience could barely stomach a woman in a bra and a flushing toilet on the big screen, much less a mentally-ill man at the level of Norman Bates. So a bit of spoonfeeding was pretty much mandatory to get the story across, maybe even through some of the censors.

Overall I had the best time up until the shower scene, then it was mostly Lila carrying the plot to the twist, and then it was over and I sat still wishing for a version of this movie that was just about, Marion being unhinged by love that she stole quite a bit of money to be with her boyfriend.

Movie-A-Day-Thon #19: Scream (1996)

Another day, another classic! Again my aversion to cashgrab sequel franchises haunt me, but in my defense by the time I was old enough to care enough about that stuff, shit like Scary Movie was on the TV far more than the actual source movies of the parodies, so meh.

A nice time capsule of a movie, not going to lie. Remember when people picked up calls from the land line and just. Indulged people? Remember when not ever call was a fucking scam?? We had it so good, holy shit. And what an intense intro!

It’s all very home invasion run-of-the-mill stuff, it was already going out of style by the time but it was a satire movie of it and other horror genres, so I can give it a pass.

Somehow the pristine lighting of the sets made it so clownish?? I don’t how to explain, it was all so neatly visible I felt like it was all shot under the lights of a hospital waiting room, kind of hard to be made scared of anything from that. I mostly just laughed. Also, people should kick killers in the balls more often again, whatever happened to that?

Some of the bullying feels so cartoonish now, but then I recall what it was like in my own childhood and… no, yeah, that’s pretty spot on, at the end of the day. And I imagine the 80s and 90s were even worse. Maybe wasn’t acted out as cheesily as Hollywood did, but yeah… Teenagers are fucking scary.

Quick thing!! The TV that falls on someone and kills them? Yeah way too downplayed. Cathode TVs, those big old blocky ones? They don’t just zap you a bunch, okay, those fuckers EXPLODE. No it wasn’t just for dramatics, they really did, it was MESSY.

Oh, Matthew Lilard. What would our current zeitgeist be without you? between Scream and Scooby Doo, who would keep us afloat? Who could have possibly been cast as William Afton, if not you? God I love how hammy his performance is, it’s peak class clown with a touch of repressed queer and I am so in love. I knew like three different kids just like that back in school, we really underestimate how common they were.

I also had NO IDEA this movie had Red Right Hand on the soundtrack, I feel lied to and deceived and mislead. Why did nobody tell me?!

Do yourself a favor, go re/watch this movie instead of the bullshit seventh one or the remake, ilu mwah <3

Movie-A-Day-Thon #18: GoodFellas (1990)

Is it bad if I said I’ve never watched a Scorcese movie until now? Cus I haven’t and I just now realized that. Not by any direct avoidance or anything, it just never happened, which is odd cus Scorcese movies are all up my father’s alley, and he was the one who often introduced me to movies or enabled me to watch them.

Fun fact, this one was supposed to be movie #15! But then I opened this movie to watch, say the run time, and went “aha not today~” for like, a few days. Sorry guys but my mental resilience is ASS of late, it took me half a day to get through Metropolis!

Lucky for us all, Scorcese is every bit the master of his craft and once we got into the story, I was HOOKED. Something about those freeze frames feel so poignant, a shame we don’t see them as much anymore. And of course there are the classics, the “why am I funny” scene, the Copacabana long shot, the . And I’m still not over Karen’s mom shouting at Henry only to pan back to fucking Tommy also shouting at him for this and that, and Henry laughing. It’s peak comedy!

I have a weak spot for love stories in crime or mafia movies, mostly because they can get so messy and stupid, it’s riveting. But most of all, I LOVE when a couple is so down bad horned up for ech other when they are being violent. “She was screaming down the street, she looked good, her eyes were so bright”, “I got turned on when he asked me to hide a bloody gun I can’t lie”, and I went, god fucking marry already, AND THEN THEY DID THE VERY NEXT SCENE!! Either they crashed and burned, or they got through this movie somehow unscathed, I was ROOTING for them.

I’m a thorough enjoyer of some inventive and even dare I say, campy art direction in movies. I like when folks get whacky with it, have fun and play around with the format and what their budget allows - and doesn’t allow! Groundedness in photography and art direction is a tool, but in some movies, it feels more like a shackle. Goodfellas of course is not the case, it’s a warranted groundedness for the based in a true story narrative. The artistry is in the technique, not so much the visuality of it all, so it’s hard for me to comment on it since, well I lack the technique know-how. But maybe it’s time I changed that?

Anyway fantastic movie but we already knew that lmao Scorcese is a household name for a reason!

Movie-A-Day-Thon #17: The Descent (2005)

I remember seeing the poster for this movie and thinking, this is the raddest shit I’ve ever seen. The 00s had some BANGER posters, not gonna lie, I think it’s a dying art personally.

I was just thinking about the stupid 00s over saturated color grading when we get a brutal accidental death THREE MINUTES IN?? I was not expecting that, gotta love the Final Destination-ing of horror. And fuck man, to kill a kid like that?? Talk about traumatizing my generation against any sort of road driving, huh.

Very pleasantly surprised and entertained by the all-women’s cast! Not an easy find, and they are all interesting their own way.

The movie really gets going once they are down the damn hole in the ground (wild visual btw), and the fried color grading truly shines once we are out of the Twilight blue woods, and into the harsh inky-darkness-and-flare-red shots. That scene was delicious to look at, not exactly because it was done Well (it was but not as good as some other movies do with harsh limited palettes), but because it really feels like I’m watching a movie.

Okay let me try to explain. Nowadays everything is ultra high definition, 8K, a william dots per pixel per square. That’s fine, whatever. Thing is, it tends to look more sharp than reality, so things kind of end up feeling too plastic. But lower quality, less realistic colors and fried levels… That’s what it feels like trying to take a recording of anything. Your phone camera isn’t always gonna get stellar videos of anything, but it’s enough, and most importantly, it’s a familiar kind of shitty. Movies with a similar grade make my brain lean on that familiarity, so it feels more real. Does that make sense?

This movie has some harsh lighting and contrasts that would put some film noir movies to shame, and I’m HERE FOR IT. The tight passage scenes are incredibly claustrophobic, as they should be, and the actresses pulled off those scenes phenomenally! Read: I almost started crying and having an anxiety attack <3 We’ve had in recent years had issues with movies and series having pitch dark scenes you can’t make heads or tails of, because rEaLiSm or whatever, but in this movie that is about ACTUAL pitch black cave darkness, they still made it able for you to see shit, even if said shit was a few headlamps and the sharp outline of the rock faces.

They also really take their time setting up the spooky stuff, we’re past the halfway and only now getting glimpses of the Falmer dudes! They carry the movie very far with just the inherent horror of the underground. And it’s been a WHILE since jumpscares got me AND didn’t piss me off about it! A single scene to thin out almost half the cast and it makes sense! Good shit!! Sadly I feel like half of the interesting tension in the movie was gone the moment they introduces the underground guys. It just turned into Alien but not in space which. Yeah not against it, but very much a sudden tone shift for me.

How I don’t hear enough about this movie as one of the horror greatest is, sincerely beyond me. Maybe I’m just out of touch with the actual cultured horror enjoyers? /lh Anyway absolutely check it out if you want a nail-biting gorefest with an hour-long spelunking traumatic experience. Can absolutely recommend it!

Movie-A-Day-Thon #16: The Evil Dead (1981)

I’d like to think most people’s first Sam Raimi movie (at least people around my age) was the Spider-Man movies. I mean, those movies were so big back then so I don’t know, by sheer statistics I must be close to the truth, right? I say that because, I don’t think they should count as Sam Raimi movies in a way. So technically my first Sam Raimi movie was. Drag Me To Hell. And my second one was fucking, that bullshit Oz movie.

So as you can imagine, I’m going into this with a very polarized mind. Everyone says the Evil Dead series is good, so there’s that, but also my Sam Raimi experience so far is… yeah.

One thing this movie does not do, is waste any damn time! Shit starts going wrong like a minute into the movie what with the almost collision then the bridge, and spooky ooky shit hits like eight minutes in?! Record breaking stuff, lads, I dig it! Also “why are we getting it for so cheap” is never something you want a friend of yours to say about this isolated cabin in the middle of the woods.

I admittedly have a weak spot for color film, I far prefer them over digital, and something about the color process (Eastmancolors, from what I can tell?) and the shitty grainy quality just works for me. Also some shots are just, straight up out of focus? It looks so bad but so good?? I think all horror movies should have shitty quality, and no you cannot talk me out of it.

I know this is probably because of budget issues, but I dearly appreciate how handmade the Necronomicon is. I can tell someone took a ballpoint pen and some markers to this thing and drew all those things themselves and it is GREAT! The makeup are so gnarly and over the top, but it works! Anything less wouldn’t have come through as well with the film quality, and the stop motion spreading effect is so cute. Oh and yes I’m still in love with strawberry jam looking fake blood. Syrup clots and everything. Sue me.

It did get a bit annoying when the demons started to show up though. The constant groaning and moaning and gnashing of teeth, with that modulator, it just started to sound like a damn wasp’s nest in my ear. Like my god, the undead are LOUD, stop screaming!

Sometimes the cuts and pacing felt a bit dumb and too, even? The constant cuts to show how everyone is reacting to whatever is happening is so cheese. It’s like the difference of those nicely evenly spaced frames in european comics versus more modern, dynamic and irregular american comics, I wish the cuts had more zest to them on the action scenes.

Anyway, pretty alright movie that charmed me with how cheesy it is, though I did lose interest around 2/3s of the way through. But then we got to the climax and the stop motion body horror, and it got interesting again. Less gross than Drag Me To Hell, but still gross. Raimi sure loves his vomit. And pouring gross fluids down his MCs screaming mouths… I’ll get to the rest of the series later on, see what’s going on there.

Also rest in pieces Scotty, you did literally everything to piss me off, including pivoting your character like three different times lol

Movie-A-Day-Thon #15: Persepolis (2007)

Persepolis the comic kind of exists in the same realm in my brain as like Maus, or the Watchmen, or even Pluto. If something is this major acclaimed reference, it spooks me off a bit from reading it, cus what if I don’t like it and people think I’m just trying to be contrarian about it? Or you know, I do like it and then I’m just one more voice in the crowd? I know, don’t ask, my brain is funky and full of anxiety. It just feels like having an opinion on something so big is a daunting endeavour, so I avoid having to have an opinion about it.

Sometimes that attitude slips into adaptations too (not always but often enough), and Persepolis the movie sadly did make the list. I am however, glad that I started this series cusit’s been pushing me to get through this mental block and just, experience things as they are instead of worrying about, literally anything else lol

And yeah, what fucking timing to watch Persepolis, huh? For context, my posts are in a queue, I got a few movies ahead in case I need to skip a day or two. I’m typing this February 2nd.

This series is focused on the visuals of a movie, but I can’t give this movie much of the credit when it’s just the animated style of the original comic. And what is there to say, the style is immaculate! And seeing it animated breathes quite a bit of life and freshness to it too, especially with their use of the grainy textures.

I cried at the bread swans and the bra jasmines, and I laughed at Jichael Mackson and the God and Marx bit. I withered at the plastic key and her time in Vienna and beamed at Marjane’s resourcefulness to listen to bootlegged Iron Maiden tapes, her quiet and loud acts of rebellion and individuality despite the repression of the regime. It’s a brutal but honest story, hard as it is to digest nowadays.

All I can truly comment on it is, if you haven’t watched it yet, you should, and if you have, then you should do it again. That also goes for the comic.

Movie-A-Day-Thon #14: Brazil (1985)

As a Brazillian, I feel like it’s my duty to watch this movie, if only to understand why in the hell it’s called that. Cus let’s be honest, looking at the title and then the blurbs about it? Baffling, until I heard the salsa and samba. Peak soundtrack choice tbh.

Lemme tell you, in this day and age watching this movie was a bit. Harrowing. Oh how close we are to what was supposed to be satirical dystopia… “Here’s the receipt for your husband”? “Suspicion breeds confidence”?? And the delivery of the check scene… I feel sick.

Sam’s house is a vibe, it’s in such a cute style, I miss it so terribly. yes even the glass panel walls I used to hate when I was a kid cus they felt so gimmicky. Shame about the automation though, I do so hate smart anythings. God remember when smartphones weren’t an increasing requirement for existing in society? I do. I remember.

A lot of the set pieces and props vary in uh, sturdiness? The tech seems plausible enough with some satisfying clunks and clicks, but the infrastructure feel paper thin? Some metal railings wobble like they are made of PVC. One might call it cheap or a show of a low budget (which they would be right), but given the narrative I feel like it works?? Shoddy infrastructure that is constantly being wrecked and patched over by the government’s actions.

Or maybe I’m just not used to US construction works. Why do yall live in sheets of plaster and cardboard TAT

To expand on the props, the robot puppets are so endearing to me. They are so awkward and stupid, I wanna hug them so bad. Who’s the cutest surveillance tool of the oppressive regime?? You areeee. (Yes, this is a dig at the Boston Robotics dogs, they were cute until they started wearing blue). Also how the entire city seems to be pierced throuhg by ducts, how opening up a wall panel and digging into the pipes feels more like opening up someone’s guts and pulling out a bullet? Phenomenal stuff.

On the costuming, I do adore when futuristic settings go ham with speculative “trending” clothes, while also remaining grounded enough to be Too out there for the general audience. It’s a fine line and I think they did pretty well. Especially when outlining the economic disparity between the rich and the common folk. They also gave us the stonest butchiest trucker lesbian I’ve ever seen since Furiosa, and GOD BLESS FOR THAT!

Overall this was a pretty great movie! Visually and narratively, with some clever sense of humor over such a strong social commentary. I’d only tell folks to beware a few scenes because they really don’t compromise on the horror and grimness of the dystopia, and it can hit a bit too close to home given our day and age. It drags maybe once or twice, but I’d rather that then they rush over the worldbuilding and setting up the plot. Especially cus once it gets going, it gets pretty solid pacing wise.

Movie-A-Day-Thon #13: House of Usher (1960)

Yipeeee huraaay!! Another day, another Edgar Allan Poe adaptation featuring Vincent Price!!

I’m going to have to hold your hand for this, folks, but the matte paintings in this one kind of suck ass. Phenomenal pieces, yes, but they would fit better in like, a pulp fiction book cover, rather than as amtte paintings.

And speaking of set work, I’m starting to play a game with these Corman movies, where I play I Spy with the set props and see how many were reused across the movies. Lemme tell you, there are more than a few xD Now listen, I don’t want to be mean here. I think it’s cute and I only do this in good fun. It’s perfectly fine and normal to reuse props!

That said, I missed those titties-out dragon thingies from the previous movies. Might watch the other movies just to see how often I can find them.

I quite enjoyed this one, actually. The drama was very focused and well-paced, and overal very grounded which worked wonders for the narrative. Roderick and Madeline are bit annoyign with the crypticness, but once the backstory is explained, it all rolls out very nicely and we can focus on the horror of it all. Blonde Vincent Price was a bit of a jumpscare, but he did wonderfully with the role here, and Myrna and Mark were also very compelling in their performance.

Can I just say, those fucking paintings are NIGHTMARE FUEL. I’m surprised nobody has sample them for some online horror series or another, cus GOOD LORD! Amazing imagery and style. Likewise with the makeup work on Myrna for the mad Madeline section, I swear she was almost an entirely different person. And of course props to her too with her expressions.

Also, 2/3 where the clymax ends with a half-ruined building going up in flames? Very good movie, can recommend for an overall gothic horror mood.

Movie-A-Day-Thon #12: Final Destination (2000)

I know, I can’t believe it either. In my defense I was like, five, when this came out? And by the time I got properly interested in horror, it just slipped right past me. And by then we had well and good reached the fourth movie, and I’ve never had much of a tolerance for long franchises. What do you need these many movies for huh? Waste my time? Anyway I’m sticking to the first one for now.

God what a time capsule. The vibes are so extremly turn of the century, it hurts my eyes a bit. The crass humor, the bullshit high school culture (fuck that bully Carter character he’s such a nothing), the clothes, even the movie’s color grading! And I have to say, the TSA check-in is also wild. You mean before 9/11, you just told them you had nothing and they let you through?! Wild!

Another thing I noticed is, how claustrophobic their suburbs are? There are trees all over, sometimes even cluttering the streets and the shots. Nowadays it seems I can only see grass-only suburbs, with the occasional (if that) tree, is this a per-state thing or a 00s thing that was lost? Sound off in the comments if you’re USAmerican!

One thing I do very much appreciate in this movie, is the pacing. It’s got a very nice build up that even knowing what the gimmick and plot is, and even if the hints are heavy-handed, it still gives you enough time to buy into it and enjoy. For the death traps, they are pretty mild all things considered, the later movies and even others like The Omen remake had more inventive (and clownish) ones. Undestandable though, this is the first movie of the series, so simple was best.

The morgue scene was CRAZY though. Watching your friend’s corpse be worked on by a mortician while he pushes your buttons about escaping death?! WOWEE, the 00s didn’t fuck around! Also shout out Tony Todd, rest in power, sir.

The gimmick of the omens before death tries to get them is a realy nice way to drop foreshadowing and set up the tension for the scene. That’s really juicy. And how the accidents keep pointing red flags at Alex, almost like Death is punishing him for having the premonition to begin with? The fucking descent to madness over avoiding Death to protect the others? The whole climax and then the ending??

Man this movie slaps. Go watch Final Destination.

Movie-A-Day-Thon #11: Ju-On: The Grudge (2002)

Sometimes, you hear about how japanese this or that is the best thing ever, and sometimes they are right, but most of the time you think to yourself, “I’m sure it’s good, maybe even great, but people just glaze japanese anything so much, it feels like orientalist bias”. And sometimes, you would be right, and it’s like not that great after all. Sometimes it’s kind of mid but because it’s Japanese™, people think it’s somehow better.

Ju-On is not not one of those cases for me, if that makes any sense.

I’m not sure how to phrase this, but when you go through some of the classics - regardless of the genre or medium - and as you watch them, they come across as a bit underwhelming because the tropes and trappings of it feel kind of worn out and maybe a bit dated. They just don’t hit as hard because you’ve experienced them so often. And I feel like a lot of the scary elements in Ju-On fall into this.

Something about the POV switches between the characters, with title cards and all, was kind of endearing? Not in a patronizing way, though I do feel like it made for a slow and stilted start, it just reminded me of anthologies or a comic series, and each character was a separate chapter or issue. Brought me back to me reading some Junji Ito short story collections back in high school, it was neat!

But for the same reason, it felt a bit hard to care about the characters much. Also felt a bit too “spook of the moment” rather than a cohesive story, even though it very much has one. Some of the scenes and jumpscare tropes were really good and effective! But then the characters would die and we would move on to the next one and it just numbed me halfway through.

I really wanted to like this movie, not just because of the hype around it, but it just wouldn’t stick the landing for me. It got better about a third of the way in, but then it plateaud again up until twenty minutes left of the runtime, and the ending just… I don’t know. It was more sad than scary, which is kind of the point but also, didn’t quite land for me. I don’t mind open-ended endings, but this one left me feeling baffled that it was over, personally.

Regardless, I’m gonna give Ju-On: The Curse a try at some point, just to see if the vibe is better. Unlikely I’ll watch Ju-On: The Grudge 2. I can see why a lot of people liked this series, but it’s a miss for me, sadly. Just not enough atmosphere and the pacing bounced me off.
